John Robson and Hexham Historic Rally FAQs

What is a navigational road rally?
Cars follow a pre-defined route which is given to them during the night whilst adhering to a time schedule. The navigators job is to make sure the route is followed correctly and the car arrives at the correct locations at the correct times.

Can I do this in my standard car?
Yes no problem at all. The set of regulations we use allows most cars to be used. Cars still have to adhere to noise and light regulations however. 99% of the roads we use are sealed surface, in other events this is different so a lot of cars come prepared with sump guards and roll cages for rougher events.

Do I need a special licence?
The event runs as three separate ‘events’. The John Robson requires a chargeable Interclub licence. The Hexham Historic and Hexham trophies require an RS Clubman licence which is free to apply for online. All licenses are available from Motorsport Uk.
Do I need insurance?
Yes your car will need to be insured, however it will also need to cover you for rallies. If your own insurance doesn’t extend to this, then there will be a ‘top up’ policy on offer to purchase from the event, this will cover you for third party only and costs about £30
Is this a timed event?
You will be following the time schedule during the night with the highest average speed you will be asked to do is 30mph. You will be penalised for being early as well as late. Some sections of the event will ask you to average 30mph to the nearest second.
Do I need to join a club?
You will need to be a member of a licensed motor club to do the event, either Hexham Motor Club or one of the invited clubs to the event. Annual membership to Hexham Motor Club costs £20 a year.
How will I be given the route?
You will be asked to plot the route on OS maps (land ranger 1:50:000) during the night. The route will be given out in ‘code’ which you will need to work out in order to plot it. The ‘code’ can be as simple as 6 or 8 figure grid references. If you prefer you can enter the trophy rally as beginner which means you get all the route given to you on a pre-marked map.
There is a full section on the club website about rally navigation which is worth a read
I don’t want to compete but can I help with the event?
Yes no problem! We need around 80 marshals on the night. This can be to record what time competitors arrive and leave, or even a job as simple as manning a gate to make sure livestock doesn’t escape. We provide a meal at the finish for marshals and also provide a goody bag.

How do I enter?
On the 24th of December the regulations will be live on the club website, these detail all the information about the event. You can put an entry in using an online system from 00:01 on New Year’s Day. The event usually fills up within a day or so of the entries being open.

I don’t want to marshal or compete, can I just come along and see what it’s about?
Yes no problem, you can come to the Auction Mart at the start to have a chat and a look round, we will also display a list of places you can watch from during the night.
